Six Exciting Features Coming in Salesforce Winter ’20 Release

Salesforce Winter ’20 release contains some of the largest enhancements to the platform to date. Some of these features (like the new Lightning Recycle Bin) come as a direct response to top voted Ideas from Salesforce’s IdeaExchange, while others serve to improve performance and address latency issues on the platform (like Salesforce Edge). With hundreds of new features spanning each of Salesforce’s products, we wanted to highlight a few that we are particularly excited about.

1. Count Unique Values in Report Results

Lightning Report Builder has added a Show Unique Count action to quickly and easily show the count of unique records in a report.

This action replaces the cumbersome manual process previously required to collect this data, commonly referred to “Power of One.” Formerly, System Admins had to create a formula field with the number “1” as the criteria; this field would need to be added to the relevant object to create a unique count. Now, all you need to do is select the column in your Report and click Show Unique Count.

For example, opportunity reports often list multiple opportunities with the same account. Click the Account Name column and toggle on Show Unique Count to see how many individual account values appear in the report. Unique counts appear as grand totals at the bottom of the report and as subtotals for each group.

To enable this feature, in Setup, navigate to Reports and Dashboards Settings and select Enable Unique Row Count Aggregate in Reports (Lightning Experience Only) and click Save.

2. Access Recycle Bin in Lightning

Finally, in a long overdue “quality of life” improvement, the Recycle Bin is now available in Lightning Experience.

Without having to switch back to Salesforce Classic, you can now view, restore, and permanently delete the items in your Recycle Bin. System Administrators can also access an org-wide Recycle Bin in Lightning. The Lightning Recycle Bin will be located in the App Launcher by default, so no additional setup is required. You can also choose to add the Recycle Bin to your navigation bar for quick access.

There are a few things to keep in mind about the language Salesforce uses to refer to the actions you can take with the Lightning Recycle Bin, as the terms have changed from Classic.

Lastly, you can’t restore any deleted reports or dashboards in Lightning (yet), so you will need to switch back to the Salesforce Classic Recycle Bin to access them.

3. Printable Views for Lists

No longer will you need to create a report for every list view in order to export your records in mass.

Click on the Printable View button on any supported object’s List View to quickly generate a list of all records from the list view and their details. The columns and fields shown on the printable view reflect your record type and list view filters. This button can also be removed from Related Lists if you don’t want your users to be able to print sensitive information.

Printable View is available for the following objects:

  • Accounts
  • Activities
  • Campaigns
  • Cases
  • Contacts
  • Contracts
  • Custom objects
  • Documents
  • Leads
  • Opportunities
  • Permission sets
  • Price books
  • Profiles
  • Products
  • Solutions

Currently, Printable View isn’t available on the Recently Viewed lists or for related lists, as search results or related list quick filters aren’t used when generating the printable view.

4. Filter Reports with Field-To-Field Filters

With this enhancement to Lightning Report Builder users can now filter reports based on data in other fields.

For example, suppose you wanted to find all buildings where the last building inspection was before the date of the last building permit issued. In Light Report Builder, you can now add a field filter, and change Value to Field in the filter dialog.

To enable this feature, in Setup, navigate to Feature Settings → Analytics → Reports & Dashboards → Reports and Dashboards Settings →and select Enable Unique Row Count Aggregate in Reports (Lightning Experience Only) and click Save.

5. Mass Actions on Search Results and Quick Filters

With this time-saving enhancement to list views you can now perform mass actions and pull search results across multiple list views at once.

Say you’re looking to reassign the owner to a batch of Leads. Just search for those you want to update or add a quick filter to your list, then click the Change Owner button. Viola, they’re updated. Say goodbye to the clutter of multiple list views!

If you already have a mass action button, no extra setup is required to enable this feature. Mass actions are currently not available on the Recently Viewed default list, and there is a limit of updating 100 records at a time.

6. Salesforce Edge

In order to improve user experience and provide faster response times, Salesforce is deploying Salesforce Edge.

As a user, your proximity to the physical infrastructure serving up your content directly influences the speed with which you can access that content.

Consider a startup in New York City that subscribes to Salesforce. Their data is stored on a server physically located somewhere in the eastern region, ensuring optimal responsiveness for the New York office. But when they expand and add an office in Utah, the users in that office will experience a noticeably slower first response time when they access Salesforce.

Salesforce Edge addresses this issue by implementing widespread physical point-of-presence nodes throughout the world. In addition to the implicit benefits of physical proximity, Salesforce Edge nodes will also leverage machine learning and caching to further improve the responsiveness of the service.

This functionality will become generally available in 2020 for all customers using MyDomain or a Custom Domain, although Government Cloud is excluded from this functionality. No other action is required to take advantage of this functionality.
